Hei! I’m Riikka, a 40-year-old Finnish slow traveler with a passion for discovering the world one culture at a time. I’ve left Finland behind—for now—to explore life beyond my home country, and I’m excited to share my journey with you.
Over the years, I’ve spent extended periods living or studying in places across Europe, including Scotland (my longest stay—six years!), Sweden (1 year), Slovenia (6 months), Hungary (multiple visits, longest 1 month), Croatia (1 month), and, most recently, Latvia (6 months).
My dream is to one day venture beyond Europe to explore the rich cultures of East and Southeast Asia, but for now, my adventures are centered around the EU.
What I love most about traveling is truly getting to know a place—its history, its people, and the little quirks that make it unique. That’s why I gravitate toward slow travel. Instead of rushing through a checklist of sights, I like to stay in one spot for at least a month, soaking up the local way of life.
I feel stressed if I need to change places every couple of days. The stress of packing and unpacking is too much! But I still want to travel, so this is the perfect compromise for me.
My favorite way to travel is to find a cozy base, like my current one in Riga, Latvia, and take my time exploring nearby towns, trails, and hidden gems. I usually leave once I feel like I have my favourite supermarket that I know like the back of my hand 😀
I’m also a big fan of staying in hostels. There’s just something special about the sociable atmosphere, meeting fellow travelers, and sharing stories over a cup of coffee—or maybe a glass of wine! Plus, as someone traveling on a budget, hostels are the perfect way to keep costs down while making connections and finding inspiration for my next adventure (talk about meeting so many people with so many different stories! It’s fascinating!).
